Excerpt 1

Later at home, Jackie began her night with a soak in the Jacuzzi and a glass of wine. With the sage incense burning, she lay back and allowed her mind to wander. Soon she fell into the rhythm of the rippling water. Within an instant her worries about work were out of her thoughts. The only thing that mattered was being in the here and now.

Her solitude was interrupted by the ring of her phone. Smiling, Jackie pressed the answer key.

“Hi Jackie, are you busy now?” Lisa asked.

“No, I’m just having a relaxing evening at home. And you?”

“Getting ready to get into my Jacuzzi.”

Jackie smiled to herself and replied, “Oh, wow! How’d you know I’m in mine?”

“Oh, it just came to me. Since everyone is out of the house, tonight would be a perfect night for a soak.” Pausing a moment, Lisa continued, “Anyway, I just called to tell you that next Thursday, my friend, Jen, has an art showing at the Illusion Gallery in West Hollywood. I was wondering if you’d like to go with me.”

Jackie’s eyes lit up. She and Kyle had been there years ago, and she really liked the art.

“Lisa, I’d love to go with you. What type of work does your friend do?”

“She is a contemporary artist who adds photographs to her work. If you would like, I can send you a link to her web site.”

Jackie rattled off her email address.

“Oh, I haven’t told you this yet.”

“What’s that?”

“For some time now I’ve been dabbling in some artwork myself. I do sculpture and would like to show you a piece that I just finished.”

Jackie felt herself tense up. Now she understood the image she had witnessed at Lauren’s party. Still she was baffled. “That would be great. I’d love to see your work.”

“All right. While you’re here I’ll show you something else I’ve been playing with.” Lisa then explained her love for African masks.

“This is so wonderful. Tell me more about your African safari vacation,” Jackie said.

Jackie and Lisa spoke for a little while.

Excerpt 2

Jackie shuddered. After a quick debate, she decided not to confide in her. After all she didn’t know Lisa very well and didn’t want to burden her with her problems.

“Thanks.”

“Listen, the reason for my call was that I wanted to know what you were doing next Thursday. If I’m not mistaken, don’t you have that day off?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, I was wondering if you’d like to come over and see my sculptures.”

Energetically, Jackie replied, “I’d love to come over and see your work. Recently a friend took me to an art gallery and they had one sculpture artist.

“I just love working with plaster. Sometimes I paint them. Tribal looks are my favorite. I have a picture of one that I recently sold that I’d like to show you.”

“I wished it was next Thursday already. I know I’m in for a real treat.”

“It’s a date then. How about around 6:00 p.m?”

After Jackie hung up the phone, she went to the kitchen and refilled her glass. Plopping on the couch, she thought about her vision she’d witnessed of Lisa.

I wonder if Lisa is going to hit the big time? Why else did this come to me?

“I know, why don’t I try a meditation and see if anything comes forward,” she said aloud.

She prepared.

It didn’t take her long to get relaxed, since she was already drunk. Closing her eyes, she began deep breathing. Soon the white glowing screen materialized. At first, all she saw were colored shapes. Then people started to materialize.

Suddenly, Jackie saw herself among the crowd. Loud voices and music were all around her, clear as day. The smell of beer and smoke filled the air. With awe in her eyes, Jackie looked amongst the people huddled in front of the Bowtie Club.

A group of people emerged from the bar and walked over to the curb. One person met eye contact with Jackie and gave her a strange look. Jackie looked away, not caring what it meant. Looking around, she recognized a woman whom she used to know down at the corner. Jackie moved in closer.

A chill crept up her legs, so she walked more briskly. Once at the corner, she met eye contact with her friend. However, the woman just kept talking like nothing at all. No matter how much Jackie waved, she could not get her attention. Disappointed, she turned to walk down the street. When she got to the corner, she turned and continued walking.

Out of nowhere came the loud barking of a large dog. Frantically, she bolted down the street as fast as she could. To her horror, the dog chased her!

I’ve got to get to safety, and fast too!

The next thing she knew, she was back in her living room and rubbing her legs, trying to get warm and out of breath. She tried to rationalize what had just happened and had no success. And then a dog reacted to her. Frightened, she left all the lights on and before she went to bed.

Lisa tapped her head and said, “Now I remember what I wanted to talk to you about. Tom told me that you love to go to the downtown Art Walk. You know, I’ve never been. Would you be up to going with me sometime?”

“Yeah, there’s one coming up next month. I’d love to go. What time do you get off from work?” Jackie said.

“Five o’clock, but I can always find an excuse to get off early. If you’d like, I could come pick you up.”

Lisa gave her phone to Jackie so she could add her information. The second Jackie touched it, she felt a bolt of energy flow through her. An instant later, she saw a flash of Lisa standing in front of a sculpture grinning. Jackie dropped the phone into her lap.

“Jackie, did I say something to offend you? If I did, I’m really sorry.”

“No. I’m not sure what just happened.”

“Are you feeling nauseous? Why don’t you sit right here, and I’ll get you a cold towel?”

When Lisa returned, she handed the towel to Jackie. Jackie buried her head in it, absorbing the moisture.

Why am I seeing random visions? This is maddening!

After a minute, she put the towel down and said, “Sometimes I just get lightheaded. It’s nothing to worry about.”

Meet USA Bestseller Author Kory M. Shrum

Good afternoon, everyone and welcome! Today we are speaking with USA Today bestseller author Kory M. Shrum. Come over and meet this amazing woman.

author photo

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”
–Maya Angelou

Tell us about yourself and your USA Today Bestselling books.

*waves*

Hi everyone! My name is Kory M. Shrum, and I write supernatural thrillers. Some of these fall under the umbrella urban fantasy (badass ladies with a job to do) and others have a more Stephen King-esque horror feel to them.

Because of my range, I prefer the term ‘supernatural thriller’ because you can count on the world building, strong characters and supernatural elements – regardless of the variation in the genre. I currently have eight novels published (in the Dying for a Living and Shadows in the Water series) with at Welcome to Castle Cove coming out May 8, and Under the Bones, coming out June 12.

ShadowsKindleGraphicBClick to Purchase

How did it feel seeing your name for the first time on the list?
It was very cool. While I don’t think it’s important to have a list “verify” your skills and ability as a writer, it is a good indicator that people are reading and enjoying your work. And that’s all I want – to share my stories with the people who love them.

Me: Thank you for pointing this out. Too many times writers get discouraged over these lists.

Let’s talk about your ‘Dying’ series.
The Dying for a Living series is complete with seven books in all. There are also two short stories (one appeared in the Badass and the Beast Anthology that I edited with the amazing writer Angela Roquet and the other appeared in her collection Limbo City Lights).

The series follows Jesse Sullivan, a death replacement agent, who discovers that not only can she serve as a death surrogate –dying in place of others—but that she has special abilities meant to be used for a higher purpose. What began as a story about a sarcastic, quirky woman with an interesting job, quickly spiraled into a plot about saving the world from dark forces (however reluctant).DyingBook1print3D

You get the call about making your first “Dying” book into a movie. Who would you cast as the main players?
Ksenia Solo would make a great Jesse Sullivan and Jennifer Lawrence a great Ally. Liam Hemsworth would be my pick for Lane. Jensen Ackles for Brinkley (yes, part of the Supernatural Fandom here ;). And Viola Davis or Danai Gurira for Gloria. Jason Mamoa might pull off Caldwell.

But this being said, I love it when casts are really diverse. So maybe Zendaya should be cast as Jesse, then Idris Elba could be Caldwell.

What keeps you in the zone when writing?
Good music. I have a subscription to Pandora (because nothing takes you out of the writing mood faster than a commercial for weight loss or Viagra). And on this Pandora, I have a Nine Inch Nails station. Oh yeah. That’ll keep me in the zone.

Have you ever been in love with one of your protagonists?
Kind of. Louie from Shadows in the Water is hands down my favorite, followed closely by Gloria Jackson from the Dying books–both are just such strong, admirable women. It’s hard not to be impressed by them. And it’s hard not to be team Ally because of her unfailing loyalty and her willingness to do what’s hard.

But apart from characters I like, falling in love might also mean characters I came to appreciate. My original opinions of characters have definitely changed over time. For example, I used to think Brinkley was the overbearing control freak…then I learned his backstory and his reason for guiding Jesse as he did – and I came to really respect and admire him. He went from that a-hole boss to a hero at the end of Book 2, Dying by the Hour, which is why I ended up telling his story in Book 3, Dying for Her.

What excites you about writing poetry?
Language and visually are really important in poetry. A powerful image and turn of phrase can create such profound meaning and resonance. Amazing stuff.

How has teaching writing to students enriched your life?
You learn so much from your students. About yourself and about your writing. It’s definitely an exchange.

Platform 9 3 4

How do you stay optimistic?
Therapy. Lots and lots of therapy. And chocolate. And yoga. And Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

Where is a place you’ve always wanted to visit? Have you been there?
I always wanted to go to Italy and France (and I’ve been to both several times). But a place I haven’t been that I want to is Kyoto. It’s on the list.

What is your favorite month in Michigan and why?
October is my favorite month for lots of reasons. First, because I love all things fall: cider, donuts, falls clothes, the cool weather, the changing leaves, pumpkins, Halloween, etc. But it also happens to be a really romantic time for me because it’s also when my wife and I fell in love, got married, and celebrate our anniversary every year.

What would you recommend for visitors to see in Michigan?
There are many beautiful places in Michigan. I love Saugatauk, (where we got married) and the lake/beach. The Au Sable River is lovely to kayak down in the summer and it has some of our favorite camping spots. The UP (upper peninsula) is also gorgeous as well as the national forests. If nature/the beach isn’t your thing, I recommend Kalamazoo for the art/culture scene or Grand Rapids for the museums. Ann Arbor for the good food and downtown area.

Oval Bay Beach

Do you like to get out into nature? Where is a favorite place and why?
I really enjoy laying on Oval Beach (Saugatauk) in the summertime. A bag of potato chips, drinks in the cooler and a book—yes please!

What was the last live music performance you saw?
Yo-yo ma played at the Wharton Center this past Monday. A few weeks before that Postmodern Jukebox at the Fillmore. Both were great.

Do you have any funny stories about your pug, Josephine?
One time she got into the trash, trying to eat something. This trash also happened to have paint materials in it (I think I was touching up the kitchen cabinets). I came home to have painted dog with trash stuck to her and white paw prints all over the wood floors…wait, was this supposed to be funny?

Josephine

What is next for you?
More books in the Shadows in the Water series(Under the Bones is out June 12) as well as a new series about Castle Cove—a creepy town with dark secrets.

Me: This is a chiller and I can already feel shivers down my back. Do keep us posted, Kory. Be sure to follow her website for news when this will be released. Also, check out her other links and follow her other links and follow her.

pexels-photo-573299.jpegNow for a surprise teaser to get you started.

She did her best to blend in, walking around, drink in hand. Then she saw Holly. This time she wasn’t letting her get away, so she locked in on her.
Arching her eyebrow, Holly said, “So you’re back, I see. How would you like to go do something bad?”
Jackie felt her heart race like she was running a marathon. Her nipples hardened and her insides quivered. Smiling, she replied, “What did you have in mind?”
     “Whatever you’d like.”
Jackie led her to the pool house. She imagined feeling the warmth of the woman’s smooth naked skin against hers.
They slipped into the darkness. The glow of the full moon provided their only light.       Closing the door, Holly was suddenly all over her. “Are you ready for the ride of your life?” Holly asked.
Jackie barely got, “Oh, yes” out of her mouth when Holly’s mouth was upon hers. She worked her tongue into Jackie’s mouth and their tongues danced. Reaching behind Jackie, she unzipped her dress and gently moved it over her shoulders. It fell to the floor and Jackie kicked it away.

My Review for Blake Everstone’s ‘Ominous Tales’

Good afternoon friends and welcome. I want to thank all of you who visited last week for my review of Amy Dunne’s ‘Season’s Meetings.’ This week I am featuring my review of ‘Ominous Tales’ by author Blake Everstone. Come over and join us.Ominious Tales Cover‘Ominous Tales’ is an assortment of short stories and poetry.  Each story is introduced with a poem.  This is elegant. They gave me a sense of wonder. The rhymes are a real treat and are great fine literature.

Each short story has its own protagonist. I am listing three who really stood out. One is daring, sexy, and possessive, making the story very exciting. Another is passive aggressive closed-minded, and stoic. Her character created another type of drama that kept me on edge.

In one of the stories, the main player lives multiple personalities as a result of being molested during her childhood.  This story really blew my mind and is a brain teaser.  Plan to read this one slowly as it is fast paced and you don’t want to miss anything. This one is a must read.

I fell in love with a fantasy story that had a mythical character in it.  This took me to another world.  I’m a big fan of imagination so this one suited me perfectly.

All the tales have paranormal in them, giving them a weird factor in an embracing storyteller way. The author grabs your attention with the first poem which leads into the first story. The author really pays attention to the characters needs and fulfills them beautifully.

This book can be read altogether or story by story. I wouldn’t recommend putting a bookmark in the middle of an exciting plot. Plan to take this with you to work so that you can sneak in a story during your downtime. You will not be disappointed. If you liked this book as much as I do, let’s start a discussion in the comments. I want to hear what you all loved about this compilation.Ominious Tales CoverHere is an excerpt to get you started.

I rush to her! Preparing all my strength to lift her and carry her was redundant, because she feels as if she only weighs 25 pounds. Dainty within my hands, I wrap my arms around her and run. I can hear each step the beast takes behind us. I imagine it to be at least 400 lbs. worth of fierce viciousness. The ground seems to vibrate as it gets closer. I fear it will not be long before it pounces. My soul quivers with every snarl. My legs feel heavy and are keeping me from running as fast as I sense I need to be. Sweat dripping from my face lands on my frail passenger. She opens her eyes and peers up at me. Her expression exhibits her gratitude as she endearingly snuggles up against me. Hearing another growl and the proximity of it, she realizes that we are still in grave danger. As if she is pulling energy, or what is left of it, from the bottom of her toes and the top of her head and generating all of it towards her mouth, she lets out a deafening screech. As the energy leaves her body, her luminosity dims and she passes back out. Her ear-splitting shriek startles me. Just when I regained my composure, while still running, a large wolf appears. Then two more and before I know it, we were facing a line of wolves in front of us.

Thank you for joining us this week. Come stop by next week when I’ll be featuring a personal blog. Stay tuned as author Graysen Morgen will be joining us in two weeks to share about her new book, ‘Castor Valley’.

My Review for Annette Mori’s ‘The Termination’

Good afternoon everyone and welcome. Today I have a special treat for you that I know you’re going to like. I am presenting my review for Annette Mori’s ‘The Termination.’ This is a thriller romance that takes place in today’s world. The two main characters, Codee and Sawyer, take part in this adventurous story.

Codee, a hospital HR executive, initially shows a side to her which stems from a shocking upbringing. To cover it up, she lives for her job. She is smart and adaptable to even the most bizarre settings. She is professional in all matters and never creates drama out of stress. She handled a totally unknown situation beautifully.

Author Photo

Sawyer is an admitting clerk at Codee’s hospital. She is loyal and will stick to you like glue. She is easy going, making her very desirable and fun to be around. She is empathic and knows how to soothe another. However, her lifestyle is too fast which causes her to make the same mistake over and over again when entering a romantic relationship.

You can decide for yourself whether you feel that she oversteps people’s boundaries. I did not. She is overly caring with her patients, though. She is very cleaver, which grabs everyone’s attention.

The secondary characters really add to the story. One, in particular, gave me a grandmother feel.  The way the author describes her made me feel I could trust her.  She is feisty and is in tune with everyone’s current affairs. She was like the mother hen to them and I feel the author did an excellent job creating her character. Some of the things she said made me crack up.  Her contributions to the plot are priceless and the story would not have been the same without her.

An intriguing character, Chynna, is introduced later on that changes the direction of the story. She is smart, courageous, and physically strong. Her participation deepens the plot and sucked me in even further.  On the inside is her tender heart, fighting for what is right. She made me cry as she was sharing her truth. She is an important character who is going to melt your heart.

During the story, there is a plotline that will give you the creeps and may upset some.

The suspense is so thick that I felt like I was on a thrill ride. This is not a simple story and you will need to pay attention. The author provides excellent descriptions and the dynamic scenes are written very clearly.

The sex is hot, a bit graphic, but tasteful.  These scenes will excite the red-hot lover inside the reader. They are full of tenderness and will leave a sweet aftertaste.

You are going to want to carve out about five and a half hours to really enjoy this amazing chronicle. It will blow your mind. It is written very realistically and believable. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. You can determine for yourself if one small infraction can change one’s perspective.

The Termination book cover

Here is an excerpt to get you started on this chilling page-turner.

Codee remembered when she’d met the enchanting woman in new-employee orientation. Sawyer had pulled her long, chestnut hair back into a neat ponytail, and the gentle waves cascaded down her back. Although Sawyer had just finished a twelve-hour night shift, those soothing, green eyes never wavered in their intensity as she appeared to hang on every word. Her thoughtful answers to the questions she tossed out to new employees, accompanied by a hint of mischief in her smile, had Codee continuously seeking her reaction while she did her dog and pony show during orientation.

Codee knew she created a compelling and entertaining first impression, but she’d often felt like a phony when some of the stories she told were embellishments of the truth. Yet, the only way to truly illustrate a point was to create that connection to her audience with an intimate anecdote. She should have been an actress because the whoppers she told at these orientations were compelling. Not everything was untrue, but even the genuine experiences were enhanced for effect.

Codee wasn’t great with names, but Sawyer’s stood out as unusual, particularly for a woman, and whenever she passed the young admitting clerk in the hall, she made a point of saying hello and having a brief, albeit superficial conversation with her. She wished she had the ability to get to know her on a personal level, but that was out of the question. As the HR executive, she needed to maintain a strictly professional relationship with all the hospital employees—without exception.

Thank you for stopping by to read about this incredible life-like story. If you like this story, be sure to check out Annette’s other books. I have reviewed ‘Locked Inside’, which I know you’re going to enjoy. Feel free to talk about your feelings on ‘The Termination’ in the comments section. I’d like to hear your thoughts.

Tell us about yourself.
I currently live in Winter Haven, FL, and am originally from Burleson, Texas. I’m married, going on 13 years to an amazing man, and we have one child together, who will be 10 in August. Growing up in Texas, there was no shortage of fun to be had with rodeos! Although I’ve since hung up my spurs, I do occasionally enjoy a horseback ride.

How long have you been writing professionally?
Since 2013.

Let’s talk about your book, Deadly Alchemy. How did you come up with the title?
The story is about an Alchemist and what she created because so deadly for her, the name came about that way.

What part of the steampunk culture do you like the best? Why?
I love the Victorian era with the corsets and bustles! With the gadgets worked in, you’re able to create a world where only your imagination is the limit. Steampunk you can make anything happen.

Would you describe your protagonist as a strong and wise woman?

Strong and smart, yes. I feel wise comes toward the end of the story.

Did anything significant come to the surface as a result of writing this book?
Nothing in particular, no.

What has been a great life accomplishment? Tell us about it.

I would have to say my daughter. She’s my daily inspiration to want to be a better person. She is the best thing I have ever done in my life.

What types of music do you enjoy listening to?
I’m all over the board from classic rock to Mozart. It really depends on my mood.

Where is a great family oriented place that you can recommend for everyone?

If you’re visiting Polk County, Florida, give Manny’s chop house a try. Amazing food and the staff are always super friendly!

Do you follow Lesfic literature? If so, who have you read?
I don’t necessarily follow one genre over another. I enjoy reading to escape. I have read so many authors it is hard to nail it down to one.

What has been the greatest gift from becoming a mother?
Aside the love of my daughter? Learning more about myself.

What intrigues you about paranormal stories?
It pushes the boundaries of what real life is. Imagine having the ability to fly, or grow gills to swim under oceans, shift to run through woods, or never having to sleep? It would be something different for sure.

Where is the most exotic location you’ve ever visited?
Europe. My husband took me to Venice back in October, then we took the Orient Express train to Paris. It was SO amazing!

How has your family been supportive of your success?
Yes, absolutely! My husband has been my number one supporter since I started this adventure.Family Photo 2

Describe the feeling you had the first time you made the USA Today Bestselling list. What, you didn’t hear me scream? HAHA! Excitement. Thrill. Disbelief. Amazement!

What is next for you?
I’ll continue writing and discovering new worlds and new characters. I love world building and bouncing ideas off my fellow authors and readers. As for what is coming next, I’m going to be working on two different series storylines, both paranormal. I’m pretty excited for them!
