My Review of Anne Hagan’s ‘Loving Blue in Red States – ‘Sweetwater Texas’

Good afternoon friends and welcome. Thank you for stopping by last week for my review for Domina Alexandra’s ‘I Belong With Her.’ It was a huge turnout. This week I am featuring my review for Anne Hagan’s ‘Loving Blue in Red States – Sweetwater Texas.’ This is a story you are going to fall in love with.

This story is about a master’s student / teacher, Emmie, who has a little son and lives with her mother in Texas. She is auditing a college class where she is writing her master’s thesis. She is family oriented, but is afraid of love and is blocking a past hurt that is affecting her now in the present. She tends to wear her insecurities on her sleeve.

I liked this protagonist and loved the interaction she had with her son. He is a sweet little boy. She has a kid side to her that I just adore.

Cass is a little bit on the feisty side and could have toned down her demeaner a bit. I really didn’t care for her in the beginning because she was brash and invasive.  As the story goes on, her character grew on me and I was able to see she really does have tender feelings. She is an excellent rancher and can rope a spooked horse and then calm him down. I thought that was another nice touch to the story.

The book is easy reading and can be read in about an hour and is perfect for an afternoon get-a-way. The dynamics between the two protagonists is priceless. It was a tug of war at time, but that is what made the story so fun. That is all I’m going to say so go get the book.

Lucius looked around the nearly empty room. He noticed Cass lingering near her seat in the front. “Something I can help you with Miss?”

“Actually, I wanted a word with Ms. Warren.”

“I see.”

Lucius turned back to Emmie. “If you want to give me those forms, I can run them by the administration office tomorrow morning when I’m back here. They’re closed right now.”

Emmie leaned toward him. “I think that’s what she wants to talk about.” She tipped her head slightly toward Cass. “I can drop them off Thursday evening when I get here, if that’s all right?”

“I guess that’s fine. Don’t forget.”

“I won’t.”

“Ladies,” Lucius said, as he turned and stepped backwards to view them both. He tipped a couple of fingers to his head as he dipped it like he was doffing an imaginary cowboy hat.

Cass watched him leave before she approached. ”Sorry to hold you up.”

“No problem. How can I help you?”

“I think Professor Fox has taken quite a liking to you.”

“Pardon?”

“Don’t get offended. It’s just something I noticed, is all. I notice things. That’s my job.”

“Then you’ve missed quite a lot. The Professor is married and I’m…I’m not in the market for dates, flings or anything else of that sort.” If she only knew, Emmie thought.

“Whatever you say,” Cass said. “I didn’t come back here to argue with you.”

“Why did you come back here?”

Cass held up the release form, face out. “This. I need just a little bit more information before I become someone’s guinea pig.”

Emmie did her best to control her temper as she addressed the brash woman. “It’s not a requirement. You’re free to skip participating and just go on your way whenever I’m…well, whenever I’m doing the things I need to do with the class for my research.”

“Not very confident in yourself, are you, Emmie?” She said her name with added emphasis.

Emmie threw her hands up. “I thought you didn’t want to argue? Look, if that’s all, I really do need to get going. I have a little bit of a drive to get home and I have work to do yet this evening.”

“Abilene?” Cass asked, as Emmie gathered her things.

“Other direction. Other side of Sweetwater, here, out a little ways.”

#Flashback – Meet author Graysen Morgen

Good afternoon Friends and welcome. Thank you for stopping by last week for my review of Breanna Hughes‘ ‘Stunted.’ Today I’m featuring a flashback of my interview with Graysen Morgen. Since then Graysen has been at work. Her book, ‘Mission Compromised‘ is doing very well and is a great read. You can read my review by clicking below:

Mission Compromised Review

In addition, she has been creating a very special writing project which will be revealed soon. More yet, she has very good news to tell the world and we are all looking forward to meeting the newest addition to her family.

*

Good afternoon friends and welcome. I want to thank all of you who visited last week for my 2018 Goals blog. Today I have a special treat for you. Graysen Morgen of Triplicity Publishing is here to talk with us. This is an interview you want to read. She is amazing. Come see why.

Author Profile PictureTell us about yourself.

I’ve been happily married to my best friend for 18½ years, and we have a 7-year-old daughter. I went to the University of Florida, which is where I met my wife. I was a Lieutenant in the Navy, working as a flight deck officer on an aircraft carrier. I now spend my time writing books, sports writing for women’s pro soccer, and coaching youth soccer.

What is your book “Boone Creek” about?

Boone Creek is a western, set in Colorado in 1880. This story is the first in a series about an outlaw woman named Jessie Henry, who leaves her past behind to start anew. She winds up in a small, troubled town called Boone Creek, where after a mishap, she becomes the Town Marshall.

Me: Graysen’s new book, ‘Castor Valley’, is the second in this series and one that you’re going to want to read.

How did you feel the moment you saw your first book published?

I was overjoyed. I’d always loved reading, and once I’d started writing, it sort of took off. I’m still thrilled to see each new book get published. It’s a huge sense of accomplishment.

What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it?

I don’t find as much time to read as I used to, but the last book I made time for was Scarlett. It’s a sequel to Gone With The Wind, by Alexandra Ripley.

How has your daughter been an inspiration for you?

My daughter, Rylie, is my whole world. She looks up to me in so many ways and mimics everything I do. I try my best to be a good role model for her. She makes me a better person. When I first wrote Natural Instinct, my wife and I weren’t thinking of having any children, at least at that time. It’s funny, my daughter turned out very similar in character to the little girl in the book. I don’t write many children into my books, but each one has a piece of Rylie in it for sure, whether it’s when she was little, what she’s like now, or what I hope for her to be like as she gets older.

Graysen and RylieWhat are your daughter’s creative activities?

She loves anything to do with art, and she’s actually written two books about animals, both of which she also illustrated. Plus, an avid reader and has a soaring imagination.

How has your family been supportive of your career?

My wife is the person who first told me I should write my own stories, instead of reading so many books, mostly because after reading a book, I’d tell her everything I would’ve done differently. J When I wrote a couple of stories, she pushed me to get them published. She’s been behind me from the very beginning. The rest of my family is very proud of what I have accomplished. Some of them have read every single book that has been published.

Can you explain more about “#Bekindchallenge”?

Be Kind Challenge is about random acts of kindness. There is so much power in a simple gesture. The challenge is a month of doing one kind thing every day.

What is the cutest thing your dogs do?

Remy and Roxy are Jack Russell Terriers who are just over a year old. They are littermate girls, and they run our lives! They chase each other around the house, watch TV with our daughter, hang out in the office when I’m writing, you name it. I’d say the cutest thing is the way they are always together. The sleep in the oddest positions like yin/yang or on top of each other.

Roxy and Remy

Who are you rooting for in the next World Cup Soccer championship?

If it’s the World Cup, then I’m always rooting for the USA. I’m a fan of Canada, Australia, and England so I root for them if they’re not playing the USA.

Where is a good place to hang out with friends?

We do a lot of family stuff, so our hangout this past year was Disney World, literally every month. We have an oasis in our backyard, so hanging out at home is always nice.

What would be the perfect ‘stay-cation’ for you?

We pretty much have a stay-cation every weekend, but the perfect stay-cation for me would be some quiet time with absolutely nothing to do but read a novel or lie in the hammock by the pool.

What is your favorite time of year and why?

I love the holidays. There is just something magical about that time of year. We decorate inside and put up a full yard display outside with a lot of lights and wood cutouts that I make myself. I also look forward to the little bit of cold weather that we get in North Florida.

Would you ever want to co-write a book with another author?

Probably not. I believe all authors have a vision, and everyone’s vision is different.

What puts you in the zone when you are writing?

Music is my muse, so I listen to music when I write. It varies from classical to pop and everything in between.

Soccer Coach

What’s next for you?

I am currently working on a romantic adventure/suspense story that involves British MI6. I’m really hoping to turn it into a series. It’s fun, thrilling, sexy, humorous, all the qualities that make for a good read.

My Review of Breanna’ Hughes’ ‘Stunted’

Good afternoon, Friends. Thank you for stopping by last week to read my promo for my book, ‘Awakened by Fate.’ Today I have another treat for you. Author Breanna Hughes has a new book out, ‘Stunted,’ that is doing very well and has been enjoyed by many. I want to share this with you as I too enjoyed it. Let’s meet our main players, Jessie and Elliot.

Author Photo 2

Breanna Hughes

Jessie is a stunt person for films. She is a tough woman who isn’t afraid of anything, except intimacy. She doesn’t date because she doesn’t want to mess up her career. She is a dedicated woman and does what she can in all situations. She likes to take care of others and take charge when she can.

Elliot is an actor and is kind of shy. She’s grateful for her life and has a gentle tone. The writer makes you understand how Elliot is feeling. It will touch you and show you her naturally sweet side.

One part of the story shocks everyone. What happens next is beyond anything I can imagine. The pressure they endured was enormous and I applaud them for their bravery. I’m not sure how I would have handled the situation had I been in their shoes. This part of the story really created a lot of good drama, making the read even more exciting.

What got me excited about this story is the author takes the reader onto a movie set. I got to see the hard work the actors put into their craft as well as being under the spotlight all day long. The reader also gets to go on a motorcycle ride for a few scenes. This I enjoyed! The descriptions are perfectly laid out.

There is plenty of hot and tender sex in the book.

This book is a fast read and can be completed in a few hours. I would recommend reading it in one sitting. You are going to fall in love with Elliot and Jesse. This book met my expectations and I’m recommending it to everyone.

Five Stars.

Here is an excerpt to get you started.

Jessie nodded as Hayley headed off to makeup. She took this moment to look around the set and noticed a dilapidated bridge they built specifically for the film. She smiled upon realizing this was the bridge she’d jump off of at some point today. First, they were filming combat scenes which was the easiest thing for Jessie; she could do it all. Her fight skills were second to none. After three years in the business, she was also quite good with knives, swords, gymnastics, and parkour. She had excellent stunt driving skills, knew how to handle a prop gun, and was particularly good at falling and landing. She had yet to find a height or apparatus she couldn’t wait to jump from. At 26-years-old, she was one of the most sought-after stunt women around.

After familiarizing herself with the set, she grabbed some water from one of the coolers and took a swig from the bottle as she watched what was going on in front of the camera. She swallowed hard when she noticed a beautiful blonde girl talking to the director. Her mouth hung open as she watched the girl going over some blocking. The blonde’s brow furrowed as she concentrated on repeating the movements the director showed her. She laughed. The sound traveled all the way to Jessie’s ears, filling her with something vaguely familiar, but she was too entranced to figure out what the feeling was.

Suddenly realizing how thirsty she was, she took another swig of water and watched as the blonde left the director to walk over to the designated makeup area. She cast a glance in Jessie’s direction. The blonde quirked an eyebrow and gave her a smile, as if catching Jessie staring at her. Jessie snapped out of it immediately and looked away. She’d never been caught off guard quite like that before and didn’t intend for it to happen again.

“Is that the legendary Jessie Knight?”

Jessie turned around and saw a familiar face walking up to her. The girl was dressed in dark jeans and a skin-tight red top.

“Kat! It’s good to see you again.” She pulled her into a hug.

“You too! I haven’t seen you since that race car project. What was that, like a year and a half ago?

“Yeah, I think so.”

“Wow, you look good. Who are you doubling for?”

“Hayley Carhart.” She looked around for Hayley, but didn’t see her.

“Oh yeah? How’s that going?”

“It’s good. She’s actually pretty cool.” Jessie tugged lightly at Kat’s hair. “Nice hair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this blonde.”

“Hey, I’m a natural blonde. I just had to go a few shades lighter. Got to look the part when I’m doubling for Elliot Chase. You’ve heard of her, right?”

Jessie shrugged. “Can’t say I have.”

Stunted Cover

Kat looked at her incredulously. “Why am I not surprised? I swear for someone who works so consistently in this industry, you really have no knowledge of it.”

“Hey, I have the knowledge I need. I know how to do my job.”

“Try reading a gossip magazine or watching Access Hollywood for once.”

“I get to know the people I double for really well. That’s enough for me. Hayley and I are at a place where we can actually joke with each other,” Jessie protested.

“Well, that’s better than the actress you doubled for on the race movie. You wouldn’t even talk to her unless it was work related. The poor girl was terrified of you.”

“I didn’t like the way she treated the crew. She was rude and demanding and disrespectful.”

Even though she worked with famous people on a daily basis, Jessie often made it clear she had no desire for fame herself. She wasn’t into the whole celebrity thing. She liked her life the way it was. Why bother adding the inconvenience of fame to it?

“Fair enough,” Kat relented.

Doesn’t this sound like a book you’d want to read? I loved it and know you will too. Please leave Breanna a nice review. Reviews show the author the reader cares. Stay tuned for next week when I’ll be presenting an interview.

Until Next Time,

Lynn

My Review of Kory M. Shrum’s ‘Shadows in the Water’

Hello everyone and welcome. Thank you for stopping by last week. I appreciate all of your support. Today I am presenting my review for USA Today Bestseller author, Kory M. Shrum’s ‘Shadows in the Water.’ Get suited up because this one will take you for a ride. Let’s meet our players.

ShadowsKindleGraphicB

Lou is a bit of a psychopath who is out to get the dirty business party responsible for her father’s death, a man she was very fond of. She follows her own agenda. The only feeling she feels is fear and you will how she handles situations. She is a strong-willed woman and doesn’t stop until the job is done. I applaud her for her strength.

She shares a disorder with her aunt, Lucy, which she uses to her advantage. The relationship between her and her aunt is strained because she doesn’t find anyone trustworthy, including herself. The only person who ever made her feel safe was her father.

Lucy is very progressive in her thinking. I’m happy the author created her as a lot of what she says is inspiring. You’ll see in the book what I mean. She is family oriented and watches out for her niece. Also, she does things like chanting and affirming and does yoga.

Then there is Mel, whom I really liked. She owns a New Age store and does readings. She gets straight to the point and doesn’t put up with anything from the other players. She has a heart of gold. I’m glad she was put in the story and I loved how the other actors respected her. You can’t hide anything from her, and when she stumbles on something, she doesn’t let go. Her personality had a comical side, which got me laughing.

Author Photo

The author throws in some things about herself into the story, adding to it. Part of it takes place at a vegan restaurant, which I felt was a nice touch.

There is a lot of blood and guts and killing in this story, which for me is a little too much at times. Be prepared from a lot of graphic scenes and some explicit language.

The pace starts out slow in the beginning and then picks up later on. For the most part, it is moderate. Pay attention because some characters are introduced quickly, and their roles are important as the story progresses. There are some bizarre happenings here, including a character whom I didn’t understand until the end. If you like this sort of story, then you are going to love this one. This is creepy cool.
ShadowsKindleGraphicBHere is an excerpt for you to enjoy:

When Lou woke, something was wrong. The light streaming from the high windows was purple. The sun was dipping low behind the trees, its last eye open on the horizon. Under her pillow, her fingers curled around her gun and found the metal warm from the feathers incubating it throughout the day.

She heard a noise again. A small sound jerked her upright, gun pointed.

“Two for two.” Lucy placed a sandwich wrapped in glossy newsprint on the counter and stuck her hand into the brown paper bag again. She gave Lou a half-smile from the kitchen island as she peeled back the wrapper. “One of these days you’re going to blow my head off and save me the trouble of worrying about you.”

“Stop creeping up on me.” Lou lowered the gun. The smell of red onions flooded the studio. Her stomach rumbled its response. When was the last time she’d eaten? She wasn’t sure. Sometimes when she was working, she’d forget to eat. The task distracted her. It was only when she worried her weak limbs or unclear head would cost her that she bothered to make time for the inconvenient task.

The burger, she remembered. She’d eaten a burger at the vegan fast food place about twenty hours ago.

“What are you doing here?” Lou asked.

“Can’t a loving aunt bring her niece a veggie loaf sandwich when she wants to? I got your favorite. Extra avocado, extra oil, and extra oregano. Come eat with me.”

Lou thumbed the safety back on and disentangled her limbs from the bedding.

“Don’t you get hot sleeping by the window?” Aunt Lucy asked. She nodded at a barstool by the island where she’d spread the sandwich on its wrapper.

Lou slid onto it, placing her gun on the counter beside the wrapper. It clanked heavy against the granite surface. “It’s the best light in the apartment. I don’t have to worry about waking up in Bangkok.”

Aunt Lucy popped open a bag of chips and dumped them onto the paper spread beneath Lou’s sandwich. BBQ. Her favorite. But Aunt Lucy was frowning. “Do you still slip in your sleep?”

“No,” Lou said, stuffing three chips into her mouth at the same time. The oils began melting the moment they hit her tongue. The muscles in her back loosened. “Because I sleep by the window, in full daylight.”

Her aunt plucked a chip off her spread and made a pensive sound. “I thought that was something you’d outgrow. I did.”

“We’ve already established I’m different.”

Lucy squeezed her elbow. “Different in the most charming ways, my love.”

Summer 2018 with Lynn

Good afternoon Everyone and welcome. It is great to see you today. Thank you for stopping by last week to read my review of Nico J. Genes’Lessons in Life.’ Today I’m sharing a few things happening in my life over the past few months.
Picture 3As many of you know, this year I published my book, ‘Awakened By Fate,’ a story about a troubled woman who is forced to walk in another direction after a tragedy one night. Now she is confronted with her fears as she adapts to her new way of life. Things that she used to throw off her shoulders were now in her face. Along the way, she meets new friends. Is romance on the horizon? We shall see.

Summer for all my life has been my favorite season of the year. Not so after this year. In July, we had over 100 degree days with one being 117. Thankfully, we got out of town that weekend and went up to enjoy the coolness of Cambria, which is located on the coast along Central CA. It was really beautiful and we got to see baby elephant seals playing in the ocean. We were in heaven.

We went to another show this year – Tribal Seeds, which for those who aren’t familiar is a Reggae band. We took a road trip out to Riverside, CA to see them. The venue was better than I had expected. What was nice was we were able to sit in our seats up on the balcony and see the show from above. I felt there was too much light action and distracted me from the show. However, the music was really nice and I got into the groove right away.
IMG_1155It wouldn’t be summer without a trip to Dodger Stadium. We went to see the Dodgers play the Arizona Diamondbacks. We had great seats and, as usual, had a blast. Unfortunately, they lost that night. There will be next time.

I have been actively at work on two manuscripts. One of them has a mystery element to it as well as a paranormal theme. There is also romance. I really love my protagonist and like what she does in the book. She is kindhearted and gives back.

My other work in progress is fantasy and paranormal. I’m not giving away the location of the story so you are going to have to wait until it debuts. It is told from two points of view. Both of my protagonists are fabulous, each having a different personality. I also have supporting characters who enhance the story. There is plenty of romance. All in all, it has been a fun journey with this one.
IMG_1101My life wouldn’t be complete without me reading a few great books by some great authors. I recently read Nico J. Genes‘, ‘Reverie Series‘ and Jenny Frame‘s, ‘Unexpected.’ Both my reviews are in the archives of this blog. I encourage you to check them out. Nico also invited me to write the forward to her latest book, ‘Lessons in Life.’ This was a huge honor and I thank Nico a thousand times.

Recently I had an interview with Bryan Aiello on what inspired me to become a writer as well as other things about me. It was a fun interview and I thank Bryan for taking the time to talk with me. You can listen to the interview here:

My Review for Nico J. Genes’ ‘Lessons in Life’

Good afternoon, friends and thanks for stopping by. I want to thank you for my continued success with ‘Awakened by Fate.’ This week I’m presenting my review of Nico J. Genes’Lessons in Life.’

Lessons in life is a compilation of short inspiring stories. Each one tells a tale about a life’s lesson. The topics include looking at what we take for granted, gratitude, and the choices we make in life. She offers good words of wisdom and a positive outlook on life.

One of my favorite stories is about something simple we assume without questioning. It goes to say what we are taught as kids do stick with us as adults and then we go ahead and do the same thing.
Lessons in Life coverA second story caught my attention deals with fear. It is interesting to learn children don’t experience it the same as adults. You’ll see what I mean in the book.

Another topic caught my eye. It is about imposing opinions. People tend to want to change other’s points of view on issues. The author explains her take on this. I find her words inspiring.

This book is a fun read and can be read within five hours. It is very moderately-paced, and each story is unique. The way each is written is clear and will grab your attention. You do not need to read the stories in order if you don’t want to. You will get the message. I feel like a new awareness came over me as a result of reading this book. I really enjoyed each story and I know you will too. I am recommending it to everyone. Don’t forget to read the introduction to the book as it was writing by yours truly.

Excerpt

Everyone has their reasons for their own choices. We are all unique individuals. We make our choices based on the way we were raised, places we grew up in, schools we attended, books that we’ve read, our life experiences, things and places we’ve seen, our thoughts, based on certain feelings or simply our taste. This list could go on and on.

My Review of Jenny Frame’s ‘Unexpected’

Good Afternoon Friends and welcome. Thank you for stopping by last week. It was a pleasure seeing you all. This story takes place in London, both the city and a more rural area. There are two protagonists, Dale and Becca who share one thing in common treasured by both. Pay attention in the beginning so that you will understand the roles of the players. Let’s meet them.
Unexpected

‘Dale turned around and gave her a wink. “Great things can happen from little beginnings.”’

Dale McGuire – ‘Unexpected’

Dale McGuire is a car mechanic and has a sweet soul. She comes off as being tough and rough around the edges. However, she is very confident in herself. She doesn’t like to share much about herself and only a handful of people know her story. She loves to entertain women but refuses to let them see the real her. She enjoys a good challenge and won’t stop until she gets what she wants. She holds a secret which is a shocker when revealed. Be prepared.
Jenny's Quote.pngThe other protagonist, Becca, is a commercial artist and a single mother to a gifted child. She is beautiful, but only on the outside. She comes off as a lonely scared aloof girl in the beginning. She is rigid and holds her feelings inside for the most part. I didn’t like my first impression of her and she made me feel uncomfortable. Truthfully, I wasn’t expecting much from her. But read on.

The only person she trusts is her child, and the mother-child relationship between them is priceless. She also holds a different secret that she won’t let go of. You’ll see more in the book.

Introducing the antagonists, Ashley and Trent.

Ashley is a news writer for a well-known publication. I didn’t like this character because she is too self-centered. Her ulterior motive caused a lot of drama.

Trent is Becca’s ex-lover and is very much still in love with her. From the start, she got on my nerves. Her words and actions add intensity to the story which plays an important role in the plot.
Author PhotoThere is romance in the story and it is hot. I will warn you that certain scenes are a bit on the graphic side, including a few choice words.

A twist early in the story is interesting. What comes next is mind blowing and you’ll never guess what happens!

What I like is both leads grow. I got to see softer sides of their personalities. I applaud the author for providing impressive flashbacks of Dale, which enriched her character. It was beautiful watching both characters evolve.

The pace of the story is moderate. This book is a real page turner. I recommend reading it in one sitting. It took me about five and half hours to read. You don’t want to miss this one. You may shed a tear or two so keep your tissue box handy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Here is an excerpt for you to enjoy!

UnexpectedBecca felt the room start to spin a little as she took a seat in the waiting room of her lawyer’s office. The Monday morning journey into the city of London had been horrendous. After putting Jake on the school bus, she walked a mile to the nearest bus stop, took the bus to the nearest train station, and caught a train to the city. Her stress levels were sky-high, and no doubt offered her a seat. Becca could have kissed her.

By the time she arrived at the offices of Trent, Trent, and Masters, she was ready to faint, vomit, or cry, possibly all three.

Becca gripped the arms of her chair tightly, trying to steady her dizziness, and said to the receptionist, “Could I have some water, please?”

“Of course, Ms. Harper.” The staff at Trent, Trent, and Masters knew her well. They had been her family’s solicitors for many years, and the firm was now run by the younger Ms. Trent.

The receptionist returned with a chilled bottle of water and a glass. “Trent won’t be too much longer.”

Trent, as everyone called her, was an old friend and ex-lover. She was the one person in the world who had always stood by her, and although their relationship didn’t work out, they had remained friends. She trusted her implicitly with her business, just not her heart.

Becca took a sip of cool water and some big breaths of air to try and quell the sick dizzy feeling she was having.
UnexpectedTrent opened her office door and with a big smile and a welcoming gesture. “Becca, wonderful to see you. Come in.”

Trent looked as smart and dapper as usual, with a pale grey three-piece suit and highly polished shoes. She was very good looking and always popular with the ladies.

Becca allowed Trent to give her a quick hug and kiss before she sat down.

“How’s the sprog?” Trent asked.

The term immediately made Becca mad. “His name is Jake.”

Trent held up her hands defensively. “I know. It’s just an expression. How is Jake, then? Still on his way to becoming the next Albert Einstein?”

Becca sat down carefully and Trent sat on the corner of the desk with her arms folded. That was Trent. She always had to play these games, but she had lost the ultimate power game with her.

“Jake’s doing well. His new school has really helped him grow.”

“Hmm.” Trent let out a long breath. “It’s extremely expensive, Becca.”

It was times like this that Becca wondered if having her ex as her lawyer was a good idea, but no matter what stupid things Trent might say, she could trust her with her personal business.

“Yes, and something you will never be burdened with,” Becca said with a sharp tinge to her voice.

“Okay, okay. No need to get excited.” Trent walked back around and sat at her desk.

Becca had been mulling over whether to ask Trent’s advice about Dale McGuire, and decided it couldn’t do any harm to get legal advice. “Trent, before we get started, I wanted to ask you something.”

Awakened by Fate

Good Afternoon Friends and welcome. Thank you for visiting last week for my review of Nico J. Genes‘ ‘Reverie Girl.’ If you haven’t had a chance to read this amazing tale, I’m encouraging you to get your copy. You will not be disappointed.

I want to thank you all for your continued support for my book, ‘Awakened by Fate.’ Recently I was interviewed by SW Andersen. You can check it out by clicking on the link below:

A lot goes into the making of a good book. In my case, it took several years. I am currently working on a few other manuscripts. Writing the story is the easy part. The hard part is editing and moving things around. I like to have the story in good shape before I send it off to the beta readers. Then they have their own notes I follow. You have to make sure everything ties together and there are no plot holes. It is easy to put in a minor character and then forget about them. That’s why it is so important to have an outline or two handy, to keep me on track.

Jackie is an interesting character in that she is so self-absorbed she doesn’t see what is going on around her. She thinks she’s doing a good job at work, at least until a rush comes in, then she doesn’t fare so well. She is walking along a path that leads to nowhere.

In the book, I go into greater details about her relationships with others. There is one woman that Jackie can’t upset. Out of jealousy and worried about losing her job, Jackie sets out to sabotage her new co-worker sent there to help her get back to speed.

Mystical Jackie

She thinks she has her life in order, but can’t see the flaws in it at least she ignores the signs. A big disappointment happens and she still doesn’t see the truth.

It is interesting regarding Jackie’s choice of lovers, including one whom she got caught with. I chose for her to have a platonic relationship with her husband for this part of the story. He is gone a lot, but one has to wonder whether or not he is choosing to go on these assignments since their relationship draws out the worst in both of them.

Along the way, Jackie meets up with others who are able to be supportive of her as she goes through her change. Even still, she has her own ideas.

At the beginning of the story, Jackie has an estranged relationship with her family and has issues regarding them. Here she has a golden opportunity to clear up the mangled strands. But it isn’t easy as you will see in the book and some things go unsaid that should be spoken.

You are going to have to read the book to find out more.

Cover PhotoI am including another excerpt:

*

Once at home with her night’s supply of booze, she got herself settled. Her phone beeped. It was Robyn again. She picked it up and texted back, “Thank you. I had fun with you last night too. I’m turning in early tonight.”  Then she tossed the device on the sofa.

“I so need to chill tonight. Why won’t this wine work faster?” she said aloud.

Then she remembered something. In the book she was reading, the author spoke of meditation.

That’s it!

She drained her glass and set it on the coffee table. Closing her eyes, she began to do the breathing exercise that Madeline had showed her. She repeated the exercise until she was in a deep relaxed state.

Picture 3Immediately the white dot materialized, and she focused on it as it danced. Then colors appeared. Before she knew it, she was watching a whole kaleidoscope in front of her. A glowing white screen, similar to that in a movie theatre, materialized. The bright light reached out to her and she felt a warm sensation all over. Faint movement appeared on the screen. She further concentrated.

A man she didn’t know was sitting at a bar looking like he was waiting for someone. The atmosphere was rustic. A few large-screen TVs showed baseball games.

The man was soon joined by another man – Kyle. He patted him on the back and sat down on the stool next to him. He got the server’s attention and ordered himself a drink.

He and the man started a conversation, but their voices were muffled, and she could not make it out. A few minutes later, the server returned with Kyle’s drink: a nice foamy beer. Her eyes widened.

This is just a figment of my imagination.

Kyle and his friend continued to talk while Jackie looked around the bar. On one of the walls was a pennant that said “Chicago Cubs.”

Kyle ordered another beer and turned to his friend and mouthed the word “baseball.” Both men turned to a TV that was showing that day’s baseball scores. The Dodgers were ahead in the sixth inning and the Cubs had lost.

Then the bartender came over to both men and shook their hands. He smiled as both men handed him cash.

2839D237-0672-4E3E-9A56-E283862A339F

Gasping, Jackie broke her meditation. Pausing a moment, she jumped off the couch and darted into office, her heart racing the entire time.

She sat down at her computer, her chest still pounding. Frantically, she typed in the Major League Baseball website.

Her eyes widened as she stared at the screen. Not only had the Cubs lost, the score was the same that she had seen on the screen in her meditation! The Dodgers’ score, too, was the same.

Confused, she put her hands on her head and tried to calm down. Not only was Kyle putting his probation into jeopardy, he was also gambling, something he’d told Jackie previously that he was going to cut out.

If this was true, then Jackie had leverage to use against him should he dig into her about her Sunday outings.

Two can play at this game.

Since I had some experiences myself I do believe in « paranormal » so I like it when I can find a good book with a paranormal background.

With « Awakened by Fate » I was surprised (in the good sense of the term) since the blurb doesn’t give us a lot about this side. Unlike some people who just rewrite the plot or give spoilers in their “reviews”, I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t give any details but let me say I liked a lot how Jackie struggles to process and learn to use her spiritual side and new abilities in the same time she fights her old bad habits (which is never easy so we must be patient … and let her do that at her own pace).
Not on the married and « bad habits » side but in a lot of others, I recognized a lot of things I went through in Jackie’s new life (including the meeting with the good people at the good moment) so I found this novel very interesting.

This unusual book could be helpful for people who are courageous enough to follow a path which usually frightens them … So people, keep an open mind and give this novel a try!!

Thank you for visiting today. It was a pleasure to see you all. Stay tuned for next week when I’ll be featuring a #Flashback Friday of an interview with a lesfic author whose books are the talk of the town.

Until Next Time,

Lynn

My Review of Nico J. Gene’s ‘Reverie Girl’

Hello Everyone and welcome. Thank you for stopping by last week. It was a pleasure seeing new and familiar faces. I can’t thank you enough for your support for my book, ‘Awakened by Fate.’

Today I am featuring my review of Nico J. Genes‘ ‘Reverie Girl. If you read ‘Magnetic Reverie‘ you’re going to love this one.

Reverie Girl Cover

This is the second installment of the ‘Reverie Series.’ It starts out in Vienna, a place that has always been a city of wonder for me. I was excited this story was continuing because I just love the two main characters, Claire and Lana. This time it is told in the first person from two points of view. Like before, there is another quick twist. Then the story unfolds.

Claire is full of light and is seeking higher meaning. In the beginning, she doubts herself and comes across as insecure. I found her to be very real and as I read, I felt a deeper understanding of her. She embarks on a journey to a foreign country. I was impressed the author chose this magnificent place.

51c0b900-0018-11e8-8d06-b1c71a8980a4

However, Claire comes off as a bit obsessed with things. She can be a bit antsy and some of her thoughts stirred up emotions in me, intensifying the plot. However, she is lovable and as I read, I couldn’t wait for her next words.

Claire’s brother, David is back and he plays a much bigger role in her life. The brother-sister bond really touched my heart and the author clearly expressed it.

Lana is very rational. She can get through most situations smoothly. She comes off as being patient and doesn’t allow her emotions to take over. She is firm with her language and she impressed me as being a lady. I loved these traits about her and they deepened her character to another level. She is very mysterious which intrigued me.

There were times I really felt for her because of her insecurities. She tends to follow the crowd and doesn’t like to step outside her boundaries. She is a well put together character.

The antagonist, Greg, is in the story. He is self-centered and only cares about having his trophy wife and his business. He overreacts, and his words caused me to tense up.

The flow of the story is smooth and carries throughout. The author takes the reader on a journey to different places in the world. The way they are described, you will feel like she is guiding you on a tour and the descriptions of the scenery are excellent. The author enlightened me with culture and history.

Canal

What I also like is the depth of character development. I know everyone’s secrets and can see inside their heads. I applaud the author for touching on a spiritual awakening. This left a lasting impression on me and I’m glad I was able to witness it.

The dynamics between the two main players can be rough at times, causing intense drama. You won’t be able to stop turning the pages.

The subtle flirting will excite you. The romance is very hot and tender.

The mother-daughter relations for one of the protagonists made me angry. In the book, you’ll see what I mean.

Be sure to carve out about five hours to read; you’re not going to want to miss anything. It may even give you another perspective on things, like it did me. I am recommending everyone to read this book. It is unlike any other book I’ve read.

Reverie Girl Cover

Here is an excerpt to get you started on this amazing journey. Enjoy!

Hoping still to find my phone I decided to use both hands. To do this I had to let go of my luggage. My suitcase didn’t easily keep balance on its own and fell straight to the floor. I bent down to pick it up and immediately my bag tipped over spewing the entire contents across the floor. Oh, great! When will I stop being so clumsy? Luckily, I didn’t have many items inside. “Do you need help?” I heard a polite male voice. I felt embarrassed and looked up at the person offering to help and barely managed to pull together few words. “No, thank you, I am fine.” Due to my embarrassment, my answer was passed in a cold tone. He really didn’t deserve it. I looked for him again to apologize but he’d left already. I managed to pick up all my belongings and placed them safely back in my bag ensuring all in the vicinity were watching and having fun at my expense. I knew it was silly to think like that, but I couldn’t help it. Then my luggage fell off again. Shit! How awkward! I looked around and felt relieved nobody was watching. Okay, concentrate, please! I must pull myself together. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes to calm down. I opened them feeling silly at getting angry about what had just happened. In the next moment, I froze.Market place square

My eyes lay on a young girl. She was walking graciously towards me. My jaw dropped as my heart went into overdrive. It was just like in the cartoons, with Tom and Jerry. This thought brought a smile to my face but I controlled it. She looked phenomenal. It wasn’t the clothes. She was dressed in casual blue jeans, a navy shirt, and All-star. It was the way she walked and her figure that left me speechless. She was average height and she moved her nicely proportionate body so elegantly. She was slim with amazing curves that would turn many a man’s head. I so wished I’d a body like hers. I wished, even more, I could hold that body in my arms. Her hair, mmmmmm, her hair looked amazing. I smiled at the thought of running my fingers through that long red curly hair. What a girl! I thought. I fell in love instantly. I forgot my suitcase and I was staring up at her whilst she approached. She must surely have noticed that she’d caught my eye. I wasn’t trying to hide it. God, she looked sublime. I was even more enamored when I saw a nice grin on her face. I wasn’t prepared. My cheeks were blushing already due to the whole spill-the-bag thing but her smile made my blushing even worse. It was without any doubt the most beautiful smile I’d ever seen. I tried to smile back nicely, but instead managed only a sheepish grin, which in any case was too late. She’d moved forward. Maybe her smile wasn’t aimed at me. Perhaps if it was, it might have been just for consolation. What was I doing? Was I now imagining I’m getting signals from all the girls who look at me, just because I knew now for sure what my sexual orientation is?Castle in the mountain

Enough with the embarrassment and with the girls for the moment. It wasn’t easy though to forget this gorgeous girl with awesome long red hair. I looked around to see where she’d gone, but it was impossible to spot her anywhere. There will be another girl out there for me. And when I meet her, I will never let her go. So now, back to my plans.

Trish and Jackie's secret place
Cover Photo

Jun 26, 2018 Nico Genes rated it it was amazing

Shelves: lesfic, paranormal, spirituality, fav, romance, lgbt, emotional-thriller

The main character of this novel is Jackie, a young attractive woman. She is married but has her husband’s approval to pursue her inclination for being with women as long as he remains the only man in her life. After a car accident, Jackie suffers a concussion that causes her something impossible to understand and accept, at first. Her world is turned upside down and only when she tries finding out more about what had happened she is starting to understand. Initially, Jackie’s reaction is normal as everything is strange and hard to accept. In a course of events and with the help of her friends she makes slow steps forward. A new woman starts being part of her life that plays the role of a lover and offers her a tremendous support. Looking at the name of the book it was normal to expect an awakening.

Even though this book has a paranormal element I loved that the author created real-life characters and happenings. Jackie was a heavy drinker and she didn’t acknowledge her problem, despite her husband’s comments and certain events. Her husband was not perfect either, he had his alcohol and gambling issues and didn’t seem to be the best partner. Jackie hasn’t been in the past very close to her family but during her transformation, she managed to solve this issue. With her sister’s big help she started her alcohol-free period. I didn’t have to resonate fully with the main character to let myself withdrawn in the story and I loved it. I followed carefully her journey and I found myself inspired by the way she was developing her spiritual side. The more she evolved in that area the more she was making the other parts of her life right.

I enjoyed everything related to spirituality, Reiki, meditation, grounding exercises that inspired me to dig further in this area. I liked the ending too, which answered some questions and left me feeling eager to know what is going to be next. I loved the Lawler’s writing style. I felt it sincere and very comforting and I am looking forward to reading other works by this author.

Type of reader: Although this novel falls under lesbian paranormal fiction I recommend it to a wider audience with love for a strong female lead facing personal transformation.

My favorite quotes from this book:

“As she lay there, she thought about her day. It had been a very spiritual experience. There were times that she’d felt at one with the trees, and she understood their language.”

“Let go and open up and allow the good things to manifest.”

“If you want change, then you need to be that change.”

Awakened by Fate Excerpt:

*

When the car came to a stop, Jackie was jolted back to reality. The valet opened the door just as a stunning brunette walked by. Her red-sequined, strapless dress barely covered her cleavage. She wore a delicate necklace decorated with the name ‘Holly’ in gold lettering.

Holly, Hmmm.

She turned her head towards Jackie and gave her a once-over. Jackie, not knowing how to react, looked towards the ground.

Kyle took her hand and they made their way to the party, already underway.

Greg was greeting guests at the front door. Upon seeing Kyle and Jackie, he said, “Welcome, I’m glad you’re here. Make yourselves at home. The bar is out back.”

“Thank you,” Jackie answered.

Kyle and Greg stayed at the entrance chatting.

What do they have to talk about at a party? It must be work or golf…guy talk. How rude.

She set off alone to the back of the house. She could not help but notice how elegantly Greg’s family lived. Their home was beautiful. Passing through French doors, she went outside where Chinese lanterns illuminated the large patio. Near the pool, a buffet table with hors d’oeuvres was decoratively arranged. To the left, was what she had come outside for: the bar.

Staring at the bartender, she said under her breath, “Hmm. A cute butch serving alcohol. Perfect!”

Mystical Jackie

Jackie walked up to the bartender and asked flirtatiously, “So, what would you recommend for a gal who doesn’t know anyone here?”

“I’ll bet you’d love a Long Island Iced Tea.” In a lower voice, she added, “They are my specialty.”

“I’d love that.”

“My name’s Trish. And if you need someone to talk to, you can always find me here. That’s what bartenders are for.” She began to make Jackie’s drink.

Jackie could not help but notice the fox medallion hanging around Trish’s neck.

How interesting, as Jackie had always been drawn to foxes.

Thanking her for her drink, she turned and walked over to the buffet and got herself a small plate of crudités. She headed towards an empty chair near the edge of the pool. She picked at her food and guzzled her drink as she watched the other guests mingle. Already she was wishing the night was over. Clouds were moving in with the dark skies.

Please rain so I can go home.

The buzz from her first drink was kicking in. She got up to get another.

She thought she heard her name being called in the distance. Turning her head, she gasped. About twenty feet in front of her was Holly, her temptress.

Did I just hear that? Wishful thinking or did she ask about me? How else could she know my name?

Cover PhotoEarly in the morning on Kauai

She approached Jackie, and with a seductive look, she winked and whispered, “Well, aren’t you radiant?” Jackie felt a pat on her derriere as her heart raced with excitement.

Ohhhhhhhh!

Holly strolled away, her hips wiggling, as if in a game of cat and mouse.

Wanna play? I’m in!

Suddenly, Jackie felt herself flush and become light-headed. Grasping the nearest chair, she collapsed in it as she saw stars. The excitement and the alcohol on an empty stomach hit her hard.

When the wave passed, she looked around, but saw no sign of Holly. Disappointed, she sat quietly for several minutes, deciding what to do next.

A wicked smile emerged across her face as she realized the possibility of a rendezvous with Holly in the pool house she noticed on her right. First line of business, however, was to get a refill.

The bar was crowded. She stood wishing the line would hurry up. She was on a mission to find her temptress.

Soon after Jackie heard a whisper in her ear.

“Meet me.”

The sound of Holly’s voice caused Jackie to salivate.

I’m winning this game tonight.

Thank you for stopping by today. This means a lot, not just for me, but for everyone else who has helped me along the way. I couldn’t have done it without you. Stay tuned for next week when I’ll be featuring a book review.
